Recently, the Guangdong Innovation Development Conference was held in Guangzhou. Hu Chunhua, Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, attended the conference and delivered a speech. The conference was presided over by Ma Xingrui, Governor of Guangdong Province. Li Yumei, Director of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, Wang Rong, Chairman of the CPPCC Guangdong Provincial Committee, and Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University, attended the meeting.
Twenty-six research achievements of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) received the 2016 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. Among them, as the primary research unit at which the research project was undertaken and completed, SYSU won 14 awards, including 1 outstanding contribution award, 4 first prizes, 5 second prizes and 4 third prizes; and 12 projects with SYSU as a participating unit won the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award.
Professor Liu Yizhi, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Sun Yat-sen University, won the outstanding contribution award. Professor Liu has been engaged in the prevention and treatment of blinding eye diseases for 32 years. He is one of China’s pioneers of minimally invasive cataract surgery and has won second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award. His research findings have been published in top-notch international journals.
Four SYSU projects won first prize of the 2016 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. They are: “The properties and mechanism research of functional thin film” undertaken by Professor Bao Dinghua from School of Materials Science and Technology; “The support technology innovation and promoted application of citizens behind the organ donation” undertaken by Professor He Xiaoshun from The First Affiliated Hospital; “Studies and application of mechanism and new therapies for hepatitis B virus related liver failure” undertaken by Professor Gao Zhiliang from The Third Affiliated Hospital; and “The research and application of a multidisciplinary treatment strategy optimization of liver cancer” undertaken by Professor Chen Minshan from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center.
